Specifically, this talk focuses on the career of Gu Erniang, the most famous female inkstone-maker in the history of the craft, as well as her relationship with her male patrons and collectors. The collaboration between artisans and scholars announced a new social order in which the hierarchy of head over hand no longer predominated.

Gu Erniang, who functions as the central character of this story, was the leading carver of inkstones in her time, but also an entrepreneur and designer who, to use Ko's words, expertly promoted her own brand. Yet, while Gu's artistry and her brand became famous, the details of her life remain hidden. A native of Suzhou, Gu Erniang's maiden name was recorded as Zao, and she was known to have been active during the Qing dynasty, probably during the Kangxi period. Married into a distinguished family of ink stone carvers, she became a carver of ink stones herself, probably after the death of her husband. Gu Erniang is widely considered to be one of the finest known Qing period inkstone carvers.
